Passionate Midwife Needed In Uganda

One time opportunity with The Shanti Uganda Society 

The Shanti Uganda Society is offering a one time opportunity for a dedicated midwife to help us open our Birth House in Uganda.  The centre will act as a bridge for safe birthing practices between modern and traditional midwifery. It is a place for women in the community to welcome their babies in a safe, encouraging and welcoming environment. It is also a learning centre for midwives, traditional birth attendants, mothers, students and international volunteers and visitors.

We are offering a three to six month placement to a qualified and passionate midwife. The placement will start in September 2010 or sooner.  The goal of the placement is to offer support to our head midwife in developing the centre's programs and procedures and training the centre's midwives in natural birthing practices.

***For this position the society will wave the monthly volunteer fee***


Train Shanti Uganda staff in natural and home birthing methods including but not limited to water birth.

Work with: Project Coordinator, local advisors, staff, international volunteers and the community to develop policy and health education programming.

In collaboration with Shanti Uganda's Head Midwife oversea Shanti Uganda midwifery staff and birth house operations.

Organize and perform administrative duties (i.e data reports, staff evaluations etc.)

Uphold Shanti Uganda's mission and values

Qualified applicants will:

Be a qualified, experienced and successful midwife.

Have strong leadership and management skills.

Have experience working and travelling in a developing country

Be open minded and flexible

Have a patient and friendly demeanour

Be an independent, self starter

Be creative and have vision

Have experience working in a culturally diverse  environment

Have knowledge and interest in natural medicine and herbs- an asset. 

Have knowledge of yoga and pre-natal yoga- an asset. 

Have experience with birth and development in Uganda- an asset. 

Preference will be given to applicants interested in a longer term placement.
